Departure

Itinerary

Your driver meets you at Tbilisi airport and takes you to your hotel, about 30-40 minutes away. Many flights land at night, so the evening may be only a short rest. If you arrive earlier, take a walk through the Old Town for a first plate of khachapuri, the cheese-filled bread that’s Georgia’s national dish. Your guide stops by, or meets you in the morning, to go over the route and explain how the Armenia border crossing works. Keep your passport handy, since you need it for both countries.

Highlights: Airport transfer, hotel check-in, trip briefing

  • Tbilisi

Start at the Narikala Fortress, reached by cable car, for a view over the river and the roofs of the Old Town. Walk down through the lanes of Abanotubani, the sulfur bath district with its domed brick roofs, past carved wooden balconies and small churches. Cross the Bridge of Peace and visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the region. In the afternoon, see the Open Air Museum of Ethnography or the Sioni Cathedral, depending on your pace. Dinner is free, and your guide can suggest a restaurant that serves Georgian dishes beyond the tourist menus.

Drive about 30 minutes to Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital, and visit the Jvari Monastery on its hilltop and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in town. Both are UNESCO-listed. Then drive the Georgian Military Highway north, about 2.5-3 hours, passing the Ananuri fortress and the Gudauri ski area. At Kazbegi, ride a 4×4 or hike up to the Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands alone below Mount Kazbek. Views depend on the weather, and the road can close in heavy snow, so your guide checks conditions the day before. You spend the night in Kazbegi.

Drive back down the highway, about 3.5 hours with stops, to Gori. The Stalin Museum is an optional stop, and your guide explains its context and the debate around how it presents the period. Continue to Uplistsikhe, a cave town carved into the rock that was an important city before Christianity arrived. Walk the old streets, halls and the pagan-era temple. Then drive about 1.25 hours back to Tbilisi, where you have the evening free. This is a long driving day, so expect to be tired by dinner.

Drive about 2-2.5 hours east to Kakheti, where winemaking has gone on for thousands of years. Visit Bodbe Monastery, the burial place of St. Nino, and walk the walls of the hilltop town of Sighnaghi. Tour the Tsinandali estate and taste wines made in qvevri, clay vessels buried in the ground, with a long lunch. A private driver covers the whole day, so you can taste freely. In October, you may see the grape harvest, which is the best time of year to be here. Return to Tbilisi in the evening.

Then visit Haghpat Monastery, a UNESCO-listed complex of the 10th and 13th centuries in the Debed canyon. Continue to Lake Sevan, Armenia’s largest lake, and stop at Sevanavank, a monastery on a peninsula, before the final hour to Yerevan. Expect 7-8 hours of driving plus the border wait, and bring snacks and water.
