Tanzania Travel FAQs
A trip with Royalairtrip allows you to have a tour with freedom and flexibility. You decide where to visit, when to see, what to eat and where to stay.
What vaccinations and health precautions do I need for Tanzania?
Preparing your health before visiting Tanzania is an essential step that should be done at least 4 to 6 weeks before your departure date to allow vaccines sufficient time to become fully effective. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if travelling from an endemic country and the certificate must be carried with your passport as it is checked at the border. Malaria is present throughout Tanzania including in Zanzibar and taking prescribed antimalarial medication combined with using a quality DEET based insect repellent and sleeping under mosquito nets is very strongly recommended. Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus, and rabies vaccinations are all advisable depending on your itinerary and activities planned during your visit.
What is the Maasai culture and will I get to experience it in Tanzania?
The Maasai are one of the most iconic and recognisable indigenous cultures in all of Africa and encountering their extraordinary way of life is one of the most memorable and meaningful experiences Tanzania has to offer. Known for their distinctive red shukas, elaborate beaded jewellery, and remarkable warrior traditions the Maasai have maintained their semi nomadic pastoral lifestyle for centuries despite the enormous pressures of modernisation happening all around them. The Maasai inhabit large areas of northern Tanzania particularly around the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where they live alongside wildlife in a unique coexistence that has lasted for generations and continues to be a source of fascination for visitors from around the world.
What are the different types of safaris available in Tanzania?
Tanzania offers an extraordinary variety of safari experiences catering to every type of traveller from first time visitors to seasoned wildlife enthusiasts. Classic game drive safaris in open top 4x4 vehicles are the most popular option and remain the best way to cover large areas of the Serengeti while maximising your chances of incredible wildlife encounters. Walking safaris in parks like Ruaha and Selous provide a completely different and immersive perspective where you experience the wilderness on foot accompanied by an experienced ranger guide. Hot air balloon safaris over the Serengeti at sunrise are a magical experience drifting silently above the golden plains watching elephants, giraffes, and wildebeest below. Fly camping safaris where you sleep under the stars in a remote bush location are perfect for travellers seeking a truly raw and authentic experience.
What is the food like in Tanzania?
Tanzanian cuisine is hearty, flavourful, and deeply influenced by the country's diverse mix of African, Arab, Indian, and Portuguese culinary traditions that developed over centuries of Swahili coastal trade. Ugali is the staple food of Tanzania consisting of a thick stiff porridge made from maize flour that is eaten daily by most Tanzanians and served alongside stewed meat, vegetables, and beans as a filling and satisfying meal. Nyama Choma which translates to roasted meat is a beloved Tanzanian tradition where goat or beef is slow roasted over an open charcoal fire and shared communally with friends and family in a wonderfully social and celebratory atmosphere. Zanzibar is a paradise for food lovers with its incredible spice heritage producing dishes bursting with flavours of cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and coconut that reflect the island's centuries old Arab and Indian trading connections.
What is there to do in Zanzibar beyond the beach?
While Zanzibar's stunning beaches are undeniably the main draw for most visitors this magical island actually offers a wealth of fascinating experiences that go far beyond simply relaxing on white sand and swimming in turquoise waters. Stone Town the historic capital of Zanzibar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most atmospheric and labyrinthine old cities in all of Africa where you can spend hours wandering through narrow alleyways discovering ancient mosques, ornate carved wooden doorways, bustling spice markets, and the former slave market that tells the island's complex and deeply sobering history. A spice farm tour is an absolute must do experience where you walk through lush tropical gardens learning to identify and taste cloves, cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper, and dozens of other spices that made Zanzibar one of the most strategically important trading islands in the entire Indian Ocean world for centuries. Dolphin watching tours in Kizimkazi on the southern tip of the island offer the wonderful opportunity to swim alongside wild spinner and bottlenose dolphins in their natural ocean habitat which is a genuinely thrilling and heartwarming experience.
