Wildlife Safaris — Where the World's Greatest Animals Live

The morning a leopard drops from an acacia tree twenty metres from your open vehicle. The sound a thousand wildebeest make at a Mara River crossing. The moment a silverback mountain gorilla makes eye contact through the jungle undergrowth. These are not photographs. These are encounters that happen in real time — and Royal Air Trip's wildlife safari packages are designed to put you in the right place for them.

The Last Great Wildlife Spectacles

Safari travel occupies a category of its own in the world of travel — not because of the luxury of the accommodation, or the complexity of the logistics, but because the experience itself is fundamentally unpredictable. You cannot schedule a leopard kill. You cannot guarantee the wildebeest will cross the river on the day you arrive at the Mara. You can only place yourself, with the right guide, in the right place, at the right time of year — and then be present for whatever the bush chooses to offer.

Royal Air Trip's wildlife safari packages are designed for travellers who want to see wildlife seriously — not from a bus window, not on a 45-minute morning game drive before returning to a hotel for lunch with other tourists. We build safari itineraries around the locations and seasons that maximise genuine wildlife encounters, and we select accommodation at the camp and lodge tier that best serves the specific experience being sought.

The best safari trips combine wildlife with something else — the beaches of Zanzibar after the Serengeti, the gorilla forest of Bwindi before a lake lodge in Uganda, the spice markets of Marrakech before heading to the Atlas foothills. Royal Air Trip builds these combination itineraries as a single, seamlessly connected journey — one booking, one specialist, complete coordination.

Understanding the Big Five - Africa's Most Sought Wildlife

Before your first game drive, understand what you're looking for — and why finding each one is significant.

Why It’s on the ListThe undisputed apex predator of the African savanna — a pride of lions on a kill is one of safari’s most extraordinary sightings

Best Destination to See ItMasai Mara (Kenya), Serengeti (Tanzania), Kruger (South Africa)

Best SeasonYear-round; dry season concentrates near water

Why It’s on the ListThe most elusive of the Big Five — solitary, nocturnal, and masterful at concealment. A leopard sighting in broad daylight remains rare even for experienced safari travellers.

Best Destination to See ItSabi Sand (South Africa) — the world’s most reliable; Masai Mara, Botswana

Best SeasonYear-round; dry season improves visibility

Why It’s on the ListThe world’s largest land animal — in family herds of 10–50 individuals, capable of extraordinary displays of intelligence and emotion

Best Destination to See ItAmboseli (Kenya), Hwange (Zimbabwe), Chobe (Botswana)

Best SeasonDry season — water sources concentrate herds

Why It’s on the ListThe most endangered of the Big Five — both black and white rhino populations are severely threatened by poaching. A sighting is genuinely special.

Best Destination to See ItSouth Africa (Kruger, Hluhluwe), Kenya (Ol Pejeta Conservancy)

Best SeasonYear-round; scarcer and harder to find than other Big Five

Why It’s on the ListOften called ‘the widow-maker’ for its reputation for unpredictability — large, powerful herds of buffalo are one of Africa’s most impressive sights, and their relationship with oxpecker birds is one of its most photogenic

Best Destination to See ItEast Africa (Masai Mara, Serengeti), South Africa (Kruger)

Best SeasonYear-round; dry season herds near water

How to Choose the Right Safari for You

Seventeen years of safari planning in five essential choices.

Which Destination?

Africa for the widest range of iconic wildlife; East Africa for the Migration; Southern Africa for reliable Big Five and rhino; Uganda/Rwanda for gorillas; India for tigers; Galápagos for endemic species. Can't decide? Call us — this is the most important conversation.

Which Season?

Every destination has a prime season. For the Great Migration, July–October. For gorilla trekking, June–September (drier). For South Africa Big Five, May–September. For India tigers, November–April. Travelling in the wrong season doesn't guarantee a poor experience — but it limits potential significantly.

safari
Which Accommodation Tier?

Private fly-in tented camps offer the most exclusive experience (fewer guests, more intimate wildlife encounters, often better guides) but at a price premium. Mid-tier lodges offer excellent value without sacrificing sighting quality. The accommodation tier affects the safari experience significantly — we advise on this specifically for every destination.

How Long?

Minimum 3 nights in any one ecosystem to experience the rhythms of the bush. Ideally 4–5 nights in primary areas, with shorter stays in secondary areas. A Kenya–Tanzania combination covering the Mara and Serengeti works well in 10–12 days. Uganda gorilla trekking requires 2 nights in Bwindi minimum.

Combine with What?

A beach extension dramatically increases the value of an East Africa safari — Zanzibar after Tanzania or the Kenya coast after Masai Mara. South Africa combines naturally with Cape Town and the Garden Route. India tiger safari combines with Rajasthan. Let Royal Air Trip build the optimal combination for your interests and travel window.

Safari Planning Expertise — Why It Matters More Than Anything

Specialist Safari Knowledge

Safari planning requires specific knowledge that generic travel agents don't have — which camps have the best guide-to-vehicle ratios, which private conservancies have the lowest tourist density, which seasons in each ecosystem peak for different wildlife. Royal Air Trip's safari specialists have this knowledge built on 17+ years of direct experience.

Vetted Camp & Lodge Partners

We work only with accommodation partners whose guide quality, vehicle standards, and conservation practices we are confident in. The quality of your guide determines the quality of your safari more than any other single factor.

Migration Tracking

The Great Migration is not a fixed event — its timing varies by season and the herds move unpredictably. Royal Air Trip monitors migration patterns and positions clients in the right ecosystem for their travel dates, adjusting if necessary.

Conservation-Responsible Partners

Royal Air Trip selects safari operators who actively support conservation — anti-poaching programmes, community benefit schemes, and low-impact wilderness practices. Ethical safari travel protects the wildlife your safari depends on.

Exclusive Airfares to Safari Destinations

As a licensed consolidator, Royal Air Trip accesses wholesale airfares to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, Entebbe, and other safari gateway cities — often significantly below public pricing, particularly on business class for long-haul flights.

Combination Trip Expertise

Safari + beach, safari + culture, safari + mountain trekking — Royal Air Trip builds multi-component African itineraries as single, seamlessly coordinated packages. One booking, one specialist, total coordination.

Zero Booking Fees

Royal Air Trip charges nothing to plan and book your safari. You pay for your travel — not our time.

Common Questions About Planning a Wildlife Safari

It depends entirely on which destination and which wildlife you prioritise. For the Great Migration river crossings in Kenya's Masai Mara, July to October is peak. For the calving season in Tanzania's Serengeti, December to February. For Big Five game viewing in South Africa's Kruger and Sabi Sand, the dry season from May to September is best. For Uganda gorilla trekking, June to September (drier and less muddy). Royal Air Trip matches your travel dates to the optimal destination and season for what you want to see.

Both are part of the same Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and host the Great Migration at different times of the year. Kenya's Masai Mara is generally where the most dramatic river crossings occur (July–October), while Tanzania's Serengeti is the larger, more diverse ecosystem with a broader seasonal wildlife calendar. The ideal safari combines both — 5 nights in Tanzania followed by 5 nights in Kenya, or vice versa. Royal Air Trip designs the optimal combination based on your travel dates.

Vaccination requirements vary by country. Yellow fever vaccination is required for Uganda and strongly recommended for Kenya and Tanzania. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all East and Southern African safari destinations. Most safari countries offer e-visa or visa-on-arrival for US passport holders, though requirements change. Royal Air Trip provides a pre-travel health and entry requirements brief for every safari destination as standard.

Many safari parks have minimum age requirements — the Masai Mara's private conservancies generally recommend 8+, and Bwindi gorilla trekking is typically 15+ for permit holders. South Africa's private game reserves, including family-oriented lodges in the Sabi Sand, are accessible from age 5 or 6. Royal Air Trip selects family-appropriate lodges and activities when children are in the group, and clearly communicates all age restrictions before booking.

Neutral earth colours (khaki, olive, brown) for clothing — not bright colours or white, which disturb wildlife. Light layers for temperature variation between dawn drives and midday heat. A good pair of binoculars is essential. Dust-proof camera bags if you're a photographer. Insect repellent. Lightweight hiking boots for walking safaris. Royal Air Trip provides a comprehensive packing guide specific to your destination and season before departure.

For a meaningful safari experience, a minimum of 3 nights in one ecosystem allows you to experience the daily rhythms of the bush. For a Kenya and Tanzania combination covering the Great Migration, 10–14 days is ideal. For a Uganda gorilla trek combined with a standard safari, 10 days. For a comprehensive Southern Africa trip covering Kruger, Cape Town, and the Garden Route, 12–14 days. Shorter trips are possible but require careful destination selection.

Yes — beach extensions are one of Royal Air Trip's most popular safari additions. The most common combination is Tanzania safari followed by 4–5 nights in Zanzibar. Kenya safari followed by 4 nights on the Kenyan coast (Diani Beach or Lamu) is another excellent option. South Africa safaris pair naturally with Cape Town and the Garden Route. All built as a single, seamlessly coordinated package.

The Wild Is Waiting — Let's Get You There

The leopard in the fig tree. The gorilla who holds eye contact. The 300,000 king penguins on South Georgia. The moment 10,000 wildebeest charge into a Mara River teeming with crocodiles. These encounters happen once, in the right place, in the right season. Royal Air Trip puts you there.
