Spectacular Landscapes of Brazil & Argentina

About This Trip

This trip follows South America's biggest landscapes from top to bottom: the Amazon rainforest, the Iguazu Falls on the Brazil-Argentina border, and the glaciers and mountains of Patagonia at the bottom of the continent. In between come two big cities, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, each with its own music and food.

Over 15 days you will watch the sun set from Sugar Loaf, canoe through flooded Amazon forest near Manaus, stand over Devil's Throat at Iguazu, walk in front of the Perito Moreno Glacier and ride a train through Tierra del Fuego. It is a private, customizable trip with several domestic flights, built for travelers who want nature on a big scale and are comfortable with an active pace.

Itinerary

A driver meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. Spend the evening settling in, with a walk along the beachfront if you have energy.

  • Rio de Janeiro

Take the cog train up Corcovado to Christ the Redeemer, then ride the two-stage cable car up Sugar Loaf for the sunset over Guanabara Bay. Pass Copacabana and Ipanema on the way. In the evening, attend a samba show with live drums and dancers. This is a full day, so we can move one of the viewpoints to the next morning if you prefer.

  • Rio de Janeiro

Fly north to Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon, and transfer to your lodge. In the afternoon, take a canoe through the flooded forest and look for caimans, birds and monkeys. After dark, go out again for a night spotting trip.

  • B , D
  • Manaus

Walk with a local guide to learn which plants are used for food and medicine and how people survive in the jungle. Visit a riverside family, then try piranha fishing from the boat. Watch the afternoon light change over the water.

  • B , L , D
  • Manaus

Take a boat to the place where the dark Rio Negro and the sandy Rio Solimoes run side by side without mixing for several kilometers. Spend the afternoon at the lodge or on one more short excursion before dinner.

  • Manaus

Today is a travel day. You fly from Manaus to Foz do Iguaçu, usually with a connection, and transfer to your hotel. Honestly, expect most of the day in airports, with time to rest in the evening.

  • B
  • Foz do Iguacu

Walk the panoramic path on the Brazilian side for wide views across the whole fall system. Add an optional boat ride to the base of the falls, which will get you soaked. The afternoon is free, or you can visit the nearby bird park.

  • B
  • Foz do Iguacu

Cross into Argentina and take the park train to Devil’s Throat, where the river drops into a huge horseshoe of water and mist. Walk the upper and lower circuits for close-up views, then fly to Buenos Aires in the evening. Allow plenty of time at the airport, and know that a late flight leaves little buffer.

  • B
  • Buenos Aires

Drive down Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest avenues in the world, and visit Plaza de Mayo, the Colon Theatre district, the cemetery at Recoleta and the colorful streets of La Boca. In the evening, enjoy a tango dinner show.

  • B , D
  • Buenos Aires

Fly south into Patagonia and transfer to your hotel at the edge of Lago Argentino. Walk along the lake or rest after the flight.

  • B
  • El Calafate

Drive to Los Glaciares National Park to see the Perito Moreno Glacier from the walkways. You can hear blocks of ice crack and fall into the lake. Optional boat trips and ice-trekking add cost, so ask which are included.

  • B
  • El Calafate

Fly to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, and settle in. The evening is free to walk the harbor, with mountains rising behind it.

  • B
  • Ushuaia

Ride the End of the World Train through the national park, then walk to Emerald Bay and Lapataia Bay at the end of Ruta 3, the road that starts in Buenos Aires. Look for beavers, birds and old signs of the people who settled here.

  • B
  • Ushuaia

Enjoy a leisurely morning before your transfer to the airport for a flight back to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and rest overnight in preparation for your departure the following day.

  • B
  • Buenos Aires

Today marks the end of your journey. Transfer to the airport and board your flight home, bidding farewell to Argentina.
